11-28: An Exciting Debate

Today I had an exciting debate with my classmates. The topic was: "Which is more important, curing stupidity (providing education) A or fighting poverty B ?" I was on the side of fighting poverty being more important than providing education, becoming debater B1. My argument was that people in poverty don't have their basic needs (e. g. food, shelter, healthcare) satisfied. The satisfaction of these basic needs is more fundamental than education. If one is stuck in poverty and is starving, could you just throw him some books and tell him "after you study you will become rich"? We need to solve the problem of extreme poverty, because poverty threatens survival, before we provide education, which purpose is to improve the quality of life. My opponent, debater A1, said that education is a stabler way towards ending poverty rather than the government giving out aids. I argued that education can be seen as a type of investment. Investments do not guarantee success...

7-3: Reflections on Big History

Today I read  Big History . The book tells history from a new perspective, starting from the birth of the universe 13.8 billion years ago, through the history of nature and humans, and into the history of the future. It is a combination of the history of nature and the history of humans. After reading, I have some thoughts I want to share with you.  The first thing is that the book allowed me to re-understand my place in the universe. We are the product of many accidents, and the combination of various factors produced us; furthermore, we are lucky to live in the spring of the universe. What if planet Earth was not at where it is now, but further away from the sun? We wouldn't exist. When I read about the predictions on the future, I learned that nothing lasts forever. Even the sun will eventually die -  in 3 billion to 4 billion years,  the sun will eventually run out of fuel and turn into a red giant. In the red giant phase, the sun will swallow Earth. This wi...

5-24: Life Is Miraculous

Today I read the article Life Is Miraculous . The protagonist of this article was a strong person. He suffered an accident that almost ended his life, causing him to undergo therapy for a year and a half. People told him he can't return to college, but he was very determined, and later returned to the University of Texas. In those days he was very busy, because he needed to attend classes, undergo therapy, and work. He didn't give up, and finally graduated with "highest honors". After I read this, I learned from his experience to never give up or quit. To see beauty in life you have to experience some unpleasantness. After reading the article I still wonder what accident did this person experience, as the article didn't describe it in detail. Clues in the article suggest that he suffered a serious bone break. I wonder if he could have done what he did if he had lost one of his senses such as vision or hearing. Also, often I would want to give up badly if somethin...

5-21: Shakespeare Learning Journal

Today I continued reading Shakespeare . I read about the ethics in Shakespeare's works, including Shakespeare's concept of personality. The book described the nature of evil in the play Othello , stating that "It is futile to demand motivation from the Vice, for the point about evil is that it is absurd, unmotivated, and inconsistent," which I do not totally agree with, because sometimes acts with good motives may become evil because they are unethical. In Macbeth, I read about the consequences of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. I learned that Shakespeare does not provide us with a map of an ethical system. The playwright's task was not to expound ethical problems, but to convey a lively and unforgettable impression of its reality.

Introduction

Hello there! Today is my first day writing this learning journal.😄 By writing this journal, I would like to write down the knowledge I gained, achieve deeper learning through thinking and questioning, promote more learning by exchanging ideas and information, and practice writing. Hope you like it!
